Loulé's Rock Salt Mine Tour & Santa Bárbara Art Collection
From€30
See the amazing geological formations under Loulé at the Rock Salt Mine
Descend 230 metres beneath Loulé to explore one of the Algarve's most unusual attractions. This guided tour takes you through Portugal's only active rocksalt mine, where you'll walk through 1.3 kilometres of tunnels carved from ancient geological formations. The Techsalt Rocksalt Mine offers a rare glimpse into both natural history and Portugal's industrial heritage.
Your underground adventure leads through expansive galleries where salt crystals and rock strata reveal millions of years of geological processes. The mine maintains a comfortable temperature of 23-24°C year-round, making it perfect for escaping the Algarve heat. Experienced guides explain how these formations developed and demonstrate the evolution of mining techniques from historical methods to modern operations.
A unique feature is the Klaus Zylla art exhibition dedicated to Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. This contemporary art collection transforms part of the cavern into an underground gallery, adding cultural depth to your mining experience. The mine's mascots, Fininho and Salty, make the tour engaging for families with children.
Tours descend over 200 metres underground through active mining areas. Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time. All safety gear must be worn throughout the visit and photography is permitted with care for safety guidelines.
The tour is not wheelchair accessible due to underground terrain and uneven surfaces. Children are welcome but pushchairs cannot be taken into the mine. Underground temperatures remain stable at 23-24°C regardless of surface weather conditions.
While exploring this fascinating underground world, you might also enjoy discovering more of the Algarve's attractions above ground. The region offers excellent opportunities for off-road adventures through the countryside or you could explore the historic streets and markets of nearby Faro on a guided walking tour.
