Few places in southern Vietnam carry the particular weight of Tây Ninh. The Sun World Ba Den Mountain cable car system now carries visitors from the base to the upper station, making the ascent accessible to those who might not attempt the steep footpaths. The ride itself offers a sweeping view over the surrounding plains, the patchwork of cultivation below gradually giving way to forest and mist as the gondola climbs. At the summit area, the atmosphere is one of quiet reverence mixed with the ordinary pleasures of a day out, incense smoke drifting past vendors selling local snacks, monks moving between temple buildings, families photographing the clouds.
