Oberhausen sits in the dense industrial corridor of the Ruhr, a city whose identity was forged in coal and steel and whose reinvention over the past three decades has been as deliberate as it has been striking. The most visible symbol of that transformation is the Gasometer, a former gas storage tank on the banks of the Rhine-Herne Canal that stands over a hundred metres tall and has been repurposed as an exhibition hall of extraordinary scale. Its circular interior has hosted large-format art installations and photography exhibitions that would be impossible to stage almost anywhere else in Europe, and the viewing platform at its summit offers a panorama across the flat, wide Ruhr landscape that makes the region's sheer scale suddenly legible.
