Slovenia's capital sits where the Alps give way to the Pannonian plain, a compact city of roughly 300,000 people that has spent centuries accumulating architectural layers without ever losing its human scale. The medieval castle on the hill above the old town, the Baroque fountains along the Ljubljanica river, and the Art Nouveau facades that line Miklošičeva street all coexist without any single era dominating the others. The old town, on the western bank of the Ljubljanica, is where most first-time visitors find their footing. The Triple Bridge, designed in its current form by the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik in the 1930s, connects this quarter to the newer city centre and has become something of an emblem for how Ljubljana thinks about itself: a small capital that takes civic design seriously. Plečnik's influence is everywhere, from the covered market along the riverbank to the National and University Library on Gosposka street, and walking between his projects gives the city a coherent thread that other European capitals of similar size rarely offer.
