This hour-long performance retells the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. Dozens of male dancers in traditional attire encircle the stage, chanting in unison to mimic monkey troops and create a spellbinding soundscape. With every gesture and expression, the performers depict Prince Rama’s epic quest to rescue Sita from the demon king Ravana. The absence of instruments and the focus on vocal chanting add an otherworldly feel, making the show unique to Bali.

Originating in the 1930s, the modern Kecak was inspired by the sacred Sanghyang ritual and aimed to share Balinese tradition with a global audience. The performance fuses ritual, music and drama, reaching its highlight in the fiery finale where Hanuman, the revered monkey god, becomes part of a symbolic fire battle. The stories and religious themes are universal, but the expressions, movements and chanting transport you straight to the heart of Balinese culture.
