Portsmouth sits on Portsea Island, making it one of the only British cities built almost entirely on an island, separated from the Hampshire mainland by a narrow tidal channel. That geographical quirk has shaped everything: the density of the old town, the constant presence of the water, and above all the city's identity as the home of the Royal Navy for more than five centuries.
