Peloponnese ガイド
Few places in Greece carry as much accumulated history as the Peloponnese, the broad peninsula that hangs below the Gulf of Corinth like a leaf from the mainland. Technically an island since the Corinth Canal was cut through the narrow isthmus in the late nineteenth century, it has always felt apart from the rest of the country in character as well as geography. The mountains here are serious, the coastline long and varied, and the sense that you are moving through layers of civilisation is almost constant.
The ancient sites alone would justify a journey. Olympia, in the western reaches of the peninsula, was the birthplace of the Olympic Games and remains one of the most evocative archaeological landscapes in the Mediterranean world, its fallen columns and shaded groves carrying a weight that photographs rarely convey. Mycenae, in the northeast, predates classical Greece entirely; the Lion Gate and the so-called Treasury of Atreus belong to a Bronze Age culture that Homer was already treating as legendary. Epidaurus, not far from the Saronic coast, is home to a theatre whose acoustic precision continues to astonish engineers and audiences alike. These are not reconstructions or approximations. They are the places themselves.
