Lanzarote occupies a place unlike anywhere else in Spain. The influence of the artist and architect César Manrique runs through Lanzarote like a thread. Born in Arrecife in 1919, Manrique spent decades shaping the island's relationship with its own landscape, designing buildings that dissolve into volcanic rock, lobbying against the high-rise tourism that consumed other Canary Islands, and establishing an aesthetic that still governs planning decisions today. His former home at Taro de Tahíche, built into a series of lava bubbles, is now the César Manrique Foundation and one of the most visited cultural sites on the island. The result of his legacy is an island that has largely resisted the visual clutter of mass tourism while still welcoming millions of visitors each year.
