They now hold galleries, restaurants, and independent shops, and on Saturday mornings the weekly market fills the forecourt with produce stalls and craft sellers. A short walk uphill through Kelly's Steps brings you into Battery Point, one of the best-preserved colonial streetscapes in Australia, where Georgian cottages and a working lighthouse precinct sit largely unchanged since the nineteenth century. These two neighbourhoods alone account for a significant portion of what makes Hobart feel so different from mainland Australian cities: the past is not curated behind glass but simply present, in the stone and the street plan.
