Reykjanesbær sits at the south-western tip of Iceland, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level and makes the ground beneath your feet a geological argument between two tectonic plates. The town itself grew up around Keflavík, which for decades served as a major NATO air base, and that history gives the place an unusual character among Icelandic settlements: part fishing community, part Cold War relic, part gateway to the rest of the country.
