Votre guide de Montepulciano
Perched on a narrow ridge of volcanic tufa in southern Tuscany, Montepulciano rises above a landscape of vineyards, cypress avenues and pale clay hills that have barely changed in five centuries. The town sits at roughly six hundred metres above sea level, which means the air is cooler than the valley floor even in August, and the views from the upper ramparts stretch across the Val di Chiana to Monte Amiata on one side and the Val d'Orcia on the other. This is a place whose identity is inseparable from the land beneath it.
The town is best understood by walking its single main street, the Corso, which climbs steeply from the lower Porta al Prato all the way to the Piazza Grande at the summit. Along the way, Renaissance palazzi designed by architects who trained under Michelozzo and Antonio da Sangallo the Elder line the route with a quiet authority that rewards slow attention. The Piazza Grande itself is one of the finest unfinished squares in Italy, anchored by the unclad brick facade of the Duomo and flanked by the Palazzo Comunale, whose tower offers a panorama that makes the climb worthwhile on its own terms.
