The lagoon that runs along the inland edge of the island, Laguna Nichupte, adds a quieter counterpoint to the open sea, and the Museo Maya de Cancun, housed in a striking modern building near the San Miguelito archaeological zone, gives the island itself a cultural anchor that many visitors overlook entirely.
