Cork earns its reputation as Ireland's second city not through size alone but through a particular self-assurance that sets it apart from Dublin. Built across a series of islands formed by the River Lee, which splits into two channels before meeting the sea at Cobh, the city has a physical character unlike anywhere else in Ireland.
