Tu guía de Caserta
Caserta sits at the northern edge of the Campanian plain, about thirty kilometres from Naples, and its identity is almost entirely shaped by one extraordinary act of royal ambition. When Charles VII of Bourbon decided in the mid-eighteenth century to build a palace that would rival Versailles, he chose this flat, well-watered site and commissioned the architect Luigi Vanvitelli to deliver something that would announce the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to the rest of Europe. The result, the Reggia di Caserta, is among the largest royal residences ever built, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose sheer scale still unsettles expectations even for visitors who arrive knowing the numbers.
The palace and its grounds are not merely the city's main attraction; they are, in a very real sense, the reason the city exists in its modern form. Caserta Vecchia, the medieval hilltop settlement a few kilometres to the north-east, predates the Bourbon project by centuries and offers a quieter counterpoint, its Norman cathedral and tightly wound stone lanes belonging to an entirely different chapter of southern Italian history. But the gravitational pull of the Reggia is difficult to resist, and most visitors organise their time accordingly.
