Why Vancouver Should Be on Your Travel List

Vancouver sits at the edge of the Pacific, framed by snow-capped mountains and surrounded by ancient rainforest. It's a city that genuinely delivers on the "mountains and ocean" promise, with world-class food, outdoor adventures, and a laid-back creative energy that makes it unlike anywhere else in North America.

The Best Neighbourhoods to Explore

Gastown: Vancouver's oldest neighbourhood is all cobblestone streets, independent boutiques, and some of the city's best restaurants. Don't miss the famous steam clock, and stick around for dinner at one of the farm-to-table spots along Water Street.

Granville Island: Part artist colony, part foodie paradise. The Public Market is the main draw, packed with local produce, artisan cheeses, fresh seafood, and craft vendors. Grab a coffee and wander the galleries and studios.

Kitsilano: Think yoga studios, organic juice bars, and one of the best urban beaches in Canada. Kits Beach has stunning views of the downtown skyline and the North Shore mountains.

Chinatown: One of the largest Chinatowns in North America, with incredible dim sum, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, and a growing night market scene.

Outdoor Adventures You Can't Miss

Stanley Park: This 400-hectare urban park is Vancouver's crown jewel. Cycle or walk the Seawall, a 10km path that wraps around the park's edge with views of the harbour, Lions Gate Bridge, and the mountains. Inside the park, you'll find towering cedar trees, totem poles, and the Vancouver Aquarium.

Grouse Mountain: Just 15 minutes from downtown, Grouse Mountain offers hiking in summer (the Grouse Grind is legendary) and skiing in winter. The Skyride gondola takes you to the summit for panoramic views of the city and beyond.

Capilano Suspension Bridge: Walk 70 metres above the Capilano River on this iconic suspension bridge, then explore the Cliffwalk and Treetops Adventure. It's a must-do, especially if you enjoy that rush of being high above the forest floor.

Sea-to-Sky Highway: If you have a day to spare, drive the Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler. The route hugs the coastline before climbing into the mountains, passing Shannon Falls and the Sea to Sky Gondola along the way.

Where to Eat

Vancouver's food scene punches well above its weight. The city is known for exceptional sushi (some say the best outside Japan), fresh Pacific seafood, and a thriving Asian food scene spanning Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Indian cuisines. For a classic Vancouver experience, try fresh salmon or spot prawns when they're in season, paired with a local craft beer from one of the city's many breweries.

Getting Around

Vancouver is easy to navigate. The SkyTrain connects the airport to downtown in about 25 minutes, and the city's transit system covers most areas you'll want to visit. That said, renting a car opens up day trips to Whistler, the Gulf Islands, and the Fraser Valley wine region. Cycling is also hugely popular, with dedicated bike lanes throughout downtown and along the Seawall.

Best Time to Visit

June through September offers the warmest weather and the longest days, perfect for hiking and beach time. Vancouver's mild climate means spring and autumn are also pleasant, with fewer crowds and lower hotel prices. Winter brings skiing at Whistler and Grouse Mountain, plus a cosy restaurant and bar scene downtown.
