David H. Koch Theater: Lincoln Center's Home for Dance

The David H. Koch Theater is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 20 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023, this performing arts center has a capacity of 2,586 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1964.

History of David H. Koch Theater

The David H. Koch Theater opened on April 23, 1964, as the New York State Theater, designed by Philip Johnson as part of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex. The theater was built for the 1964-1965 World's Fair and was designed in collaboration with choreographer George Balanchine to meet the specific technical requirements of dance performance.

Philip Johnson's design exemplifies what he called 'structural classicism,' a modernist approach that borrows from neoclassical proportions. The interior is defined by an ornate gold-latticed ceiling and faceted crystal chandeliers that create a warm, glittering atmosphere. The theater was renamed in 2008 following a $100 million gift from David H. Koch.

The theater is the permanent home of New York City Ballet, founded by Balanchine, and hosts American Ballet Theatre residencies and other dance companies throughout the year. The Nutcracker, performed by NYCB every holiday season, is one of New York's most beloved annual traditions.

Seating and Accessibility

The theater seats 2,586 across five levels: Orchestra, First Ring, Second Ring, Third Ring, and Fourth Ring. The Orchestra and First Ring offer the best views. For ballet, slightly elevated seats in the First and Second Rings allow a better view of choreographic formations.

The theater is wheelchair accessible with designated seating areas. Assistive listening devices are available. Elevators serve all levels.
