Few places in Iceland announce themselves quite so dramatically as Gullfoss. The name translates simply as Golden Falls, a reference to the golden hue the water takes on in certain light, and the falls themselves plunge in two dramatic stages into a rugged canyon carved by the Hvítá river over thousands of years. The site sits on the Golden Circle, the roughly circular route that connects Reykjavík with some of the country's most celebrated natural landmarks, and Gullfoss has long been one of the most visited points along it. That popularity is earned rather than manufactured.

The landscape here belongs to the South region of Iceland, a stretch of the country defined by glaciers, lava fields, and the kind of scale that makes human presence feel genuinely small. Langjökull, Iceland's second largest glacier, lies close enough to be a practical destination from Gullfoss, and its presence shapes much of what visitors come here to do.
