Da Nang sits at the midpoint of Vietnam's central coast, where the Han River meets the South China Sea and the Marble Mountains rise abruptly from the coastal plain. It is the country's third-largest city, yet it carries none of the overwhelming density of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. The pace here is comparatively measured, the seafront is genuinely accessible, and the city functions as a practical base for some of the most historically and scenically significant sites in Southeast Asia.

My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site roughly an hour's drive southwest, is the anchor of any culturally serious visit to the region. The Cham civilisation built these Hindu temples between the fourth and fourteenth centuries, and the complex that survives, despite significant damage during the American War, remains one of the most atmospheric archaeological sites in Vietnam. Half-day tours departing from Da Nang itself, or from nearby Hoi An, are the standard way to visit, and the early-morning light across the brick towers is worth the early start.
