Calgary sits where the prairies meet the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, a position that shapes almost everything about the city: its skyline, its weather, its self-image, and the range of things a visitor can do within a single day. The downtown core rises sharply from the Bow River, and on clear days, which are plentiful given Calgary's reputation as one of Canada's sunniest cities, the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies form a backdrop that still surprises people who arrive expecting only flatlands.
