Venice's spiral staircase

The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is one of Venice's most curious buildings. Tucked away in a small courtyard near Campo Manin, its external spiral staircase ("bovolo" means snail in Venetian dialect) winds upward through five levels of arched loggias, blending Gothic and Renaissance styles in a structure unlike anything else in the city.

The staircase

Built around 1499 by Giovanni Candi, the staircase was commissioned by Pietro Contarini to connect the floors of his palazzo while making an architectural statement. Each level features arches of different proportions, creating a rhythmic ascent that rewards you with expanding views at every turn. The climb is gentle and the staircase wide enough to feel comfortable rather than claustrophobic.

The view from the top

The rooftop belvedere provides a 360-degree panorama across Venice's rooftops. The campaniles of San Marco and numerous churches punctuate the skyline. It is one of the few elevated viewpoints in Venice that most visitors never find, making it less crowded than the Campanile while offering a more intimate perspective.

The Tintoretto Room

Inside the palazzo, a small gallery displays works attributed to Tintoretto and his workshop. The room provides a quiet contrast to the staircase's drama and adds artistic depth to what might otherwise be a purely architectural visit.
