La teva guia de Ronda
Few Spanish towns announce themselves quite as dramatically as Ronda. Perched on a sheer-sided plateau in the Serranía de Ronda, the town is split in two by El Tajo, a gorge that drops nearly a hundred metres to the Guadalevín river below. The Puente Nuevo, completed in 1793 after decades of construction, spans that void with a confidence that still stops visitors mid-step. This is not a backdrop engineered for tourism; it is simply what Ronda looks like, and the effect never quite wears off.
The gorge divides the old Moorish quarter, La Ciudad, from the newer Mercadillo district that grew up after the Christian reconquest of 1485. La Ciudad holds the densest layer of history: the Arab baths, among the best-preserved on the Iberian Peninsula, the Palacio de Mondragón with its arcaded courtyard, and the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, built over the town's main mosque and still showing the minaret repurposed as a bell tower. Wandering between these without a fixed itinerary is one of the more rewarding ways to spend a morning in Ronda, because the streets are compact enough that getting briefly lost costs nothing.
