Setting the Scene with a Pre-Show Drink
A drink before the curtain goes up is one of the great pleasures of a West End evening. It sets the tone, gives you time to settle into the night, and transforms a trip to the theatre from a single event into a proper occasion. The streets around Theatreland are packed with brilliant bars, from hidden speakeasies to centuries-old pubs, and finding the right one can elevate your whole experience.
Timing is everything. Aim to arrive at your bar by 6:30pm for a 7:30pm show — that gives you a comfortable hour for one or two drinks without feeling rushed. If you are heading to a matinee, the same principle applies: arrive an hour before curtain and enjoy the quieter lunchtime atmosphere.
Cocktail Bars with Proper Theatre Energy
The Donovan Bar at Brown's Hotel on Albemarle Street is discreetly glamorous, with leather banquettes and cocktails that are as beautiful as they are delicious. It is a short walk from several Shaftesbury Avenue theatres and feels like stepping into a film. Swift on Old Compton Street has a gorgeous upstairs bar for a quick, perfectly made drink — their Negroni is one of the best in London.
For something more theatrical, try Mr Fogg's Society of Exploration in Covent Garden. The eccentric Victorian explorer theme is immersive without being gimmicky, and the cocktails are genuinely excellent. Closer to the Apollo Theatre, Cahoots on Kingly Court is a 1940s-themed underground bar in a former tube station — the kind of place that makes you feel like your evening started the moment you walked through the door.
Traditional Pubs with West End History
If cocktails are not your thing, London's historic pubs offer something equally special. The Lamb and Flag on Rose Street has been serving drinks since 1623 and is tucked down a cobbled alley that feels miles from modern London. The Salisbury on St Martin's Lane is a Victorian masterpiece with etched glass, bronze nymphs, and the kind of ornate interior that makes you want to order a proper pint and soak it all in.
The Harp on Chandos Place, just off Trafalgar Square, has won multiple CAMRA awards for its real ales and is a favourite among theatre staff and performers. You might find yourself standing next to someone who is about to go on stage that evening. The Cross Keys on Endell Street is another gem — a proper locals' pub that has not changed much in decades, with good beer and zero pretension.
Wine Bars for a More Refined Start
Gordon's Wine Bar on Villiers Street holds the title of London's oldest wine bar, and the candlelit basement is extraordinarily atmospheric. It gets crowded, so arrive early, but there are few better places to start an evening. Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels on Neal's Yard offers an excellent French wine list in a beautiful space that feels like a Parisian cave à vin.
Whichever bar you choose, the key is to savour it. A pre-theatre drink is not about getting tipsy before the show — it is about creating a sense of occasion.
