The Best Experiences in Brisbane

Brisbane has transformed from a sleepy river city into one of Australia's most interesting destinations. With the 2032 Olympics on the horizon, investment in attractions, dining, and cultural spaces has accelerated. Here are the experiences worth your time.

South Bank

South Bank is Brisbane's cultural heart. Streets Beach (a man-made inner-city beach with a lagoon pool) is free and open year-round. The surrounding precinct includes the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Queensland Museum, State Library, and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. You could spend an entire day here without paying a cent.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

The world's first and largest koala sanctuary, Lone Pine is home to over 100 koalas plus kangaroos, platypus, and other Australian wildlife. Unlike most zoos, you can hold a koala here (one of the few places in Australia where this is still permitted). It's a 20-minute drive from the CBD or a scenic riverboat ride from South Bank.

Eat Street Northshore

Brisbane's best food market operates Friday and Saturday evenings in repurposed shipping containers along the waterfront at Hamilton. Over 70 vendors serve everything from dumplings and barbecue to gelato and craft cocktails. Live music, fairy lights, and river views make it one of the best nights out in Brisbane.

Howard Smith Wharves

Nestled under the Story Bridge, this restored heritage precinct has become Brisbane's most popular dining and drinks destination. Craft breweries, upscale restaurants, and casual bars line the riverfront, all with the bridge dramatically overhead.

Day Trips

Gold Coast: 1 hour south. Surf beaches, theme parks (Dreamworld, Sea World, Warner Bros. Movie World), and the Burleigh Heads National Park coastal walk.

Sunshine Coast: 1 hour north. Noosa's Main Beach (consistently rated among Australia's best), the Eumundi Markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the Glass House Mountains for dramatic volcanic peak walks.

Moreton Bay Islands: Moreton and North Stradbroke islands offer snorkelling, wildlife, and beaches without the tourist crowds.
