Kapolei sits on the western flank of Oahu, roughly thirty miles from Honolulu, and occupies a stretch of coastline and volcanic terrain that feels markedly different from the tourist corridors most visitors associate with Hawaii. The Ko Olina lagoons, engineered from a rocky shoreline into four calm, crescent-shaped swimming areas, draw families and couples who prefer sheltered water to the open surf of the south shore. Further inland, the terrain becomes rougher and more dramatic, the kind of landscape that rewards those willing to move away from the beach entirely.
