Hurghada occupies a long stretch of Egypt's Red Sea coast, a place that spent most of the twentieth century as a modest fishing settlement before transforming, from the 1980s onwards, into one of the country's most visited resort destinations. The city sits roughly midway along the western shore of the Red Sea, with the Eastern Desert rising behind it and, on clear days, the faint outline of the Sinai Peninsula visible across the water.
