Hannover 指南
Hannover occupies a particular place in the German imagination, a city that rebuilt itself almost entirely from rubble after the Second World War and emerged with a pragmatic, orderly character that its residents wear without apology. The old Altstadt was largely destroyed in the bombing raids of 1943, and what stands today is a careful reconstruction alongside modernist civic architecture, giving the city a layered quality that rewards attention rather than instant picturesque gratification. It sits in the north of Lower Saxony, on the River Leine, and has served as a royal seat, a trade fair capital, and briefly, through the personal union of its Hanoverian dynasty, as the origin point of the British royal line that runs from George I onward.
The Herrenhäuser Gärten remain the most compelling single reason to spend time here. The Grosser Garten in particular is one of the finest examples of baroque garden design in northern Europe, a formal arrangement of parterres, fountains, and clipped hedgerows that was laid out in the late seventeenth century under the influence of Versailles. Leibniz, who spent years in Hannover as court librarian and adviser, walked these paths. The gardens survived the war in better condition than the city itself, and they continue to define the cultural ambition of the place in a way that no amount of postwar reconstruction quite manages.
