La Spezia sits at the eastern end of the Ligurian coast, tucked between the Apennine hills and one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. The hilltop castle, the Castello di San Giorgio, looks out over the rooftops and the gulf below, and the small archaeological museum it houses contains finds from the Ligurian Apennines that rarely feature in the broader narrative of Italian antiquity.
