Few Argentine cities wear their colonial past as visibly as Salta. The capital of the north-western province that shares its name sits at roughly 1,200 metres above sea level in the Lerma Valley, ringed by the eastern foothills of the Andes, and its ochre and terracotta streetscapes have earned it the local nickname La Linda, the beautiful one.
