Din guide til Devon

Din billettguide til Devon

Devon occupies a broad swathe of south-west England, bounded by the Bristol Channel to the north and the English Channel to the south, making it one of only two English counties to hold two separate coastlines. That geography shapes almost everything about the place: the light, the pace, the food, and the way visitors tend to move through it, pulled between moorland interiors and long Atlantic-facing shores. Dartmoor sits at the county's centre, a high granite plateau of tors, ancient field systems, and weather that can shift from clear to low cloud within the hour. Exmoor clips the northern edge. Between them, a deeply rural county unfolds in red-soil farmland, sunken lanes, and market towns that have changed remarkably little in outline over centuries.

Exeter anchors Devon administratively and historically, its cathedral close and medieval street plan giving the county a genuine urban centre without overwhelming the rural character that defines the wider landscape. Totnes, Dartmouth, and Barnstaple each carry their own distinct identity, and the fishing villages of the South Hams, places like Salcombe and Kingsbridge, attract visitors who return year after year rather than simply passing through. The north Devon coast around Croyde and Saunton has long drawn surfers to its westward-facing beaches, while the Jurassic Coast, which Devon shares with Dorset, brings a geological dimension that rewards those willing to walk the cliff paths rather than simply photograph them from the car park.
