Din guide til Cancun
Few cities in Mexico carry quite the same dual identity as Cancun. On one side sits the Hotel Zone, a narrow barrier island curving along the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, lined with resorts and facing water that shifts from turquoise to deep cobalt depending on the hour. On the other sits the city proper, a planned urban grid that grew rapidly after the Mexican government designated this stretch of coastline for tourism development in the early 1970s. What was once a small fishing settlement of a few hundred people is now a metropolitan area of nearly a million, and the contrast between those two realities gives Cancun a texture that purely resort-focused destinations rarely develop.
The Hotel Zone, known locally as the Zona Hotelera, is where most first-time visitors spend the majority of their time, and it earns that attention. The beaches along Playa Delfines and the northern stretches near Punta Cancun offer some of the most reliably clear water on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Yucatan Peninsula. The lagoon that runs along the inland edge of the island, Laguna Nichupte, adds a quieter counterpoint to the open sea, and the Museo Maya de Cancun, housed in a striking modern building near the San Miguelito archaeological zone, gives the island itself a cultural anchor that many visitors overlook entirely.
