Few English cities wear their history as visibly as York. A guided tour of the Minster goes considerably further than the nave, taking visitors into the undercroft, where Roman and Norman foundations sit beneath the Gothic superstructure, and up into the tower for views across the Vale of York. It is the kind of place where a single visit rarely feels sufficient.
