Jouw gids voor Palma de Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca sits on the southern coast of its island with a confidence that comes from more than two thousand years of continuous habitation. Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, and the Crown of Aragon all left their mark on the city, and the result is a layered place where a Gothic cathedral rises directly from the seafront, its honey-coloured stone catching the Mediterranean light in a way that stops people mid-stride on the Passeig Maritim. That cathedral, La Seu, was begun in the thirteenth century after the Christian reconquest of the island and took several hundred years to complete, with a nave interior later touched by Antoni Gaudí. It remains the defining image of Palma, visible from the water long before you reach the harbour.
The old city unfolds behind the cathedral in a dense grid of narrow streets, courtyards, and Renaissance palaces whose ground floors have quietly become galleries, boutiques, and restaurants over recent decades. The Barri Gòtic and the adjacent Arab Quarter, Es Puig de Sant Pere, reward slow walking rather than itinerary-ticking. Further west, the neighbourhood of Santa Catalina has evolved into the city's most animated food district, its former market building now surrounded by restaurants that draw as much on the island's own produce as on broader Balearic and Spanish traditions. Palma is a city that functions well at a deliberate pace.
