Few cities in Mexico carry quite the same dual identity as Cancun. The Hotel Zone, known locally as the Zona Hotelera, is where most first-time visitors spend the majority of their time, and it earns that attention. The beaches along Playa Delfines and the northern stretches near Punta Cancun offer some of the most reliably clear water on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Yucatan Peninsula. The lagoon that runs along the inland edge of the island, Laguna Nichupte, adds a quieter counterpoint to the open sea, and the Museo Maya de Cancun, housed in a striking modern building near the San Miguelito archaeological zone, gives the island itself a cultural anchor that many visitors overlook entirely.
