Booth Theatre: Shubert Alley's Dramatic Jewel
The Booth Theatre is one of New York's premier venues for live entertainment. Located at 222 W 45th Street, New York, NY 10036, this broadway theater has a capacity of 783 and has been a fixture of the city's cultural landscape since 1913.
History of Booth Theatre
The Booth Theatre opened on October 16, 1913, five days before its neighbor the Shubert Theatre. Designed by Henry Beaumont Herts in Italian Renaissance style, the theater was named after Edwin Booth, one of the greatest American actors of the 19th century and brother of John Wilkes Booth.
The facade features sgraffito decoration in brown and ivory, the last surviving example of this once-popular decorating technique in New York City. The theater was built as one half of a pair with the Shubert, the two buildings flanking Shubert Alley.
The Booth has hosted some of American theater's most celebrated plays. You Can't Take It with You won the Pulitzer Prize here in 1936 after 837 performances. The Time of Your Life earned the Pulitzer in 1939. Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George premiered here in 1984. Next to Normal (2009) won the Pulitzer before its Broadway transfer, and the musical Once on This Island played here in 1990.
