Few Argentine cities wear their colonial past as visibly as Salta. The capital of the north-western province that shares its name sits at roughly 1,200 metres above sea level in the Lerma Valley, ringed by the eastern foothills of the Andes, and its ochre and terracotta streetscapes have earned it the local nickname La Linda, the beautiful one. The Plaza 9 de Julio at the city's centre is one of the best-preserved colonial squares in South America, framed by the pink-stuccoed cathedral, the Cabildo, and arcaded buildings that have stood largely unchanged since the eighteenth century. The Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage valley that runs north towards the Bolivian border, draws visitors who want to understand the deep indigenous and mestizo cultures that have shaped this corner of Argentina far more than European immigration ever did. Salta is the natural base for all of it.
